Best Practices Policies

Ethics

Orb Media aims for journalistic independence. The publication says it never knowingly pursues a story that directly promotes a donor’s financial, personal or political interests. Its policy requires it to disclose the nature of all arrangements with outside donors, be they individuals, foundations or corporations, to the reporting team before committing to any donor-funded project.

Ownership & Funding

Orb Media launched with a significant initial investment by the organization's founder, Molly Bingham. The organization's operations have been funded through the investment, earned revenue, crowd-funding, foundation and other individual support.

Orb is governed by an independent board of directors that is responsible for organizational oversight, management accountability and for assessing the overall direction and strategy of Orb.

Diverse Voices

Orb commits to reflecting differences in race, class, generation, gender and geography in its reporting. Consideration of the roles equity and privilege play are looked at in facts checked, stories told and how stories get told.

Corrections

Orb's policy is to tell readers when an error has been made, the magnitude of the error and the correct information as quickly as possible. Stories with errors will be digitally amended/updated and a note in italics will appear at the end of the story about the change/correction.

Unnamed Sources

Orb's policy only allows the use of unnamed sources in rare cases where the importance of the information provided outweighs the importance of source transparency. The CEO will know the identity of the source and the information provided by the source will only be reported if it meets Orb's usual requirements for documentation. Orb says it will never identify the source to anybody without written acceptance from the source.
